Description: Bridge To Terabithia is a wonderful book. Growing up the child of a Dad in the military, we moved around a lot but up until the summer between my 5th and 6th grade years we had always lived in community with lots of military families and I had attended schools where new faces were welcomed and differences were celebrated. That summer my parents decided that since my Dad would be retiring within the next 5 years my mom moved my sister and I back to their home town in rural south Georgia. This was a community locked in time. They were not accepting of outsiders or people who looked, acted, or talked differently from them. That year for the first time in my life I didn't fit in. I talked different from them. I acted different from them and I dressed different from them. And for the first time in my life, I learned what it felt like to be picked on because I was different. So in many ways, I was a bit like both Leslie. After a while I quite trying to fit in. It was their loss if they were so narrow minded that they couldn't accept people who were not born in that backwoods town and never ventured more than a few miles outside the county-lines. All this changed by the time we entered High School but for those few years in Jr. High, I was the outsider. During those years, I often wondered the woods and fields that surrounded our home. There was one place I loved. It was behind a pond, right down from the house my great grandparents had lived in. There was a stream that came out of the ground in a small cave that pooled outside the entrance to the cave before running down the hill to the pond. While the cave was really too small for someone to go inside it, it was large enough to store treasures in and the water in the stream was so cold it would keep canned drinks cold. There were huge oak trees surrounding this place with huge vines growing in them and from tree to tree. My sister and I spent many fun filled hours in this special place swinging in the vines, having picnics, and imagining a world much different from the one we lived in. Sometime I would go alone or with just my dog and sit and draw or tell the dog my deepest secrets. Over the years the area has been bulldozed and cleaned up, the stream has dried up and the cave fell in but the trees are still there and some of the vines. A Day In My Life

Description: It reads: A Day in My Life. May 4, 2010. As usual, I overslept. Seems I'm spending too much time on FaceBook and Farmville at night and sleeping right through the alarm in the morning. I hurry and get dressed then remember I better go feed my Farmville Dog - wouldn't want him running away. After all he cost me $5000 - that is Farmville $$$ - LOL. As I'm finishing up on FaceBook, my dear sweet daughter, Arabi, comes in my room to tell me she finished up her English Final at college - one more final and she's off for 4 weeks. She goes and gets Bryce ready for Day Care while I finish up getting dressed and turn my TV to Disney for Bryce. After he has a crying spell because he hates getting up in the mornings as much as I do, we finally get him in a good mood. We watch an episode of Handy Manny then we're off for Day Care and work. As I step in the garage I see it is raining. Perfect. Bryce hates being shut up indoors. We make it to Willacoochee with Bryce singing "Rain, Rain Go Away. Come again another day." and some song about two little birds. I'm reminded at how amazing it is to hear a child sing. I'm even more amazed that he remembers the words and actually says them right when he doesn't in normal conversation. But enough of that - sing my baby boy sing. I love your beautiful voice. After dropping him off, it's off to the office 12 miles away. I'm listening to Glen Beck on the radio when a good friend calls and we talk until I get to the office. Nothing like politics to get the morning started. I get to work only to find that my clerk blew his tire out on the way to work. He made it there safely but his tire is another story. We go into the office and begin another normal day at work. I check the email and news wire services and load the articles for the paper and ads onto a page for my clerk to layout the pages of the newspaper. The phone is ringing constantly. After finishing up with this, I write a couple of stories for the paper - one about our local state representative being caught DUI while in Atlanta and another about a local man who was inducted into the Georgia Hall of Fame recently. Around noon, my daughter calls and tells me we are under a tornado warning and the sirens are going off all over the neighborhood. She's cleaning out the bathroom closet so she and her fur baby can hide in there if one touches down in the area. I call the Day Care to make sure they know because the town the Day Care is in doesn't have any sirens. They have already been called and have the children napping in the hall instead of the big room. After checking with NOAH, I'm feeling confident that we are all safe from any real danger but my clerk wants to go storm chasing - young people have no concept of their own mortality. Next came billing for the month. My least favorite part of my job but something that must be done if we want to stay in business. As I'm finally beginning to make some headway in that, I look at the clock and it's 3PM. I'm late for a Board of Commissioners meeting and the Sheriff is over an hour late in getting me the info for his arrests over the weekend. I tell my clerk to call the sheriff and I'm off to the meeting. I get to the Commissioners office just in the nick of time. They haven't started yet so, I'm relaxing and gathering up my info for another story I will write tonight. A group of businessmen have brought out a local factory which is in foreclosure and are here to ask for a tax abatement. With jobs as scarce as hen's teeth around here anything that will save a job is given major attention and the board voted to give the company a 5 year abatement. The county attorney advises the board of two other possible businesses interested in coming to our area - one is a chicken processing plant and the other is a sawmill. Both would bring more than 300 desperately needed jobs to our community which currently has a 19.2% unemployment rate. The Board then goes on to discuss budgeting items and a DOT contract. After the meeting, I talk with one of the Commissioners regarding the recent chicken fiasco in our neighboring county but has major effects in our county with the chicken farmers and other community happenings. Then I'm off and running again to pick up my grandson from Day Care. He comes running to me then has a melt down because he wants an apple and I don't have one. I finally get him calmed down with a juice box and promise him we will run through McDonalds for an Apple Salad on the way home. Thankfully McDonalds has one Apple Salad left and we're off to the house with my now happy camper in the back seat. Once at home, Bryce and I go into the house and I turn on cartoons for him. I go to the kitchen to begin supper where I find a note that Arabi and Chris are going to cook tonight. So I settle in with Bryce watching Max and Ruby with him. My daughter and son-in-law get home a few minutes later and begin supper in between playing with Bryce. Supper was Buffalo Chicken Wings grilled on the grill, Stuffed potatoes, and salad. It was delicious. After supper, I have a chance to get caught up on the Treasure Hunt at Digitials and work on a few LOs. After his bath, Bryce settles in on my bed with Peter Pan on the TV until he falls asleep and I move him into his bed.
